Nevertheless, Pirquet's test is positive in a very large number of people who appear to be free from tubercle, and reveals, therefore, to a certain extent at least, latent tuberculosis. It will be seen from the accompanying tables that in suspected cases the percentage of positive reactions is about the same as with Koch's method. All things considered, Pirquet's test may be considered almost as accurate a diagnostic method as that of Koch, with the added advantage that it does not give rise to any constitutional disturbance. It causes only a slight itchiness at the site of inoculation. Calmette's Method. Shortly after Pirquet had published his first observations, his method was discussed at a meeting of the Berlin Medical Society (15th May, 1907) and here Wolff-Eisner mentioned incidentally that he had observed a reaction when tuberculin was instilled into the eye. Calmettc-1 thereupon carried out a series of systematic observations on the subject, and published his results in the following month (19th June, 1907). 1 le showed that the reaction, now generally known as "Calmette's ophthalmoreaction," is typical and specific. A detailed paper on the subject by Sydney Stephenson" appeared in THE OPHTHALMOSCOPE a short timeago, so that I may be permitted to limit my Review to the work which has appeared since then. Two questions have occupied the attention of almost everybody who has interested himself in the ophthalmoreaction: (1) the reliability, and (2) the safety of the test.
